When IBM sold its PC division to Lenovo in 2005, there was concern that the Thinkpad brand would lose its value and premium perception. In a bid to smooth the transition, Lenovo completed a canny, if confusing, deal to use IBM branding on its products until 2010. The Thinkpad Z60t is its first endeavour, but rather than play it safe, Lenovo has taken some bold steps.

There's something eerily familiar about this rockdirect laptop. The Xtreme Ti resembles the Alienware Area 51m 7700 in a number of ways: there's the similar chassis, the identical screen and the more or less identical components.

While some may be put off by the Xtreme Ti's overwhelming weight, bulky laptops like this are still the only option if you absolutely must have cutting-edge gaming performance in a luggable device. The Ti's remarkable similarity to the Area 51m reveals its viability for game enthusiasts.

Designed for highly mobile students and cost-conscious business travellers, the Averatec 4265 thin-and-light laptop offers plenty of features, including a DVD burner. While the system demonstrated great battery life, if you have your heart set on a machine with screaming performance, you'll be sorely disappointed.

Design
At first glance, the Averatec 4265's white interior looks uncannily like that of an iBook. The lid of the Averatec 4265, however, is a solid shade of navy blue.

As it's a slate-style tablet, there is no keyboard built into this device. You interact with software is by tapping the screen with a stylus.
